Labradorite – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Feldspar
Chemical Formula: (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)₄O₈
Crystal System: Triclinic
Hardness: 6 – 6.5 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Translucent to opaque
Colour: Typically grey to dark green or black base, with iridescent flashes of blue, green, gold, orange, or violet — a phenomenon known as labradorescence

Common Sources:
Labradorite is primarily sourced from Canada (Labrador and Newfoundland), with additional deposits in Madagascar, Finland, Russia, Mexico, and India. Finland produces the particularly vivid full-spectrum variety known as Spectrolite.

Formation:
Labradorite forms in igneous rocks, especially gabbro and basalt. Its signature flash — labradorescence — comes from internal lamellar structures that refract light, causing brilliant colour displays when the stone is viewed at different angles.

Interesting Fact:
Labradorite was first discovered in the 1700s in Labrador, Canada. Local Inuit legend says it holds the frozen light of the aurora borealis — a fitting story for a crystal that seems to glow from within.

Varieties of Labradorite

  • Classic Labradorite:
Features a dark base with flashes of blue, green, or gold. Some high-grade pieces reveal rarer colours such as violet, magenta, or pink, especially when cut and polished to maximise flash. These are highly sought after and prized for their emotional and spiritual resonance.

  • Spectrolite:
A rare Finnish variety displaying full-spectrum colour flash — blue, green, red, orange, yellow, and violet — often with sharper definition and deeper contrast.

  • Golden or Yellow Labradorite:
A lighter, semi-transparent variety that carries a soft golden glow and is often associated with clarity and personal empowerment.

  • Black Labradorite:
A darker base with subtler labradorescence. Often used when deeper grounding is needed while still maintaining spiritual connection.
