Citrine – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Citrine – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Quartz
Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)
Crystal System: Trigonal
Hardness: 7 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Transparent to translucent
Colour: Pale yellow to golden honey, amber, or smoky orange; colour is due to traces of iron within the crystal lattice

Common Sources:
Citrine is found in Brazil, Zambia, Russia, Spain, and Madagascar. Naturally occurring Citrine is relatively rare compared to the abundance of heat-altered material available on the market.

Formation:
Citrine forms when Quartz containing trace amounts of iron is subjected to heat during its formation, either naturally via geothermal activity or through heating during geological processes. The iron content transforms the clear or purple Quartz into golden hues.

Interesting Fact:
Citrine’s name comes from the Latin citrina, meaning "yellow." It was historically worn to ward off negativity and attract wealth, and is still known today as the "merchant’s stone."

Natural vs. Heat-Treated Citrine

Natural Citrine:

  • Pale yellow to honey gold in colour

  • Typically found in clusters or as slender points

  • Has a subtle, grounding energetic feel

Heat-Treated Citrine (from Amethyst or Smoky Quartz):

  • Rich golden to burnt orange hues

  • Most common form on the commercial market

  • Created through artificial or enhanced heat exposure, mimicking natural geological processes

  • Still widely used in energy work for manifestation, joy, and warmth

Varieties of Citrine

  • Natural Citrine: Typically pale, often translucent or smoky

  • Heat-Treated Citrine: Bright orange-yellow, usually repurposed from Amethyst

  • Congo Citrine: A deeper-toned natural variety, often in raw or rough form

  • Citrine with Smoky Inclusions: A natural combination of both stones, valued for its balanced energy
