Tangerine Quartz – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Tangerine Quartz – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Quartz
Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)
Crystal System: Trigonal
Hardness: 7 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Transparent to translucent
Colour: Soft orange to rust-toned quartz, caused by natural iron oxide coating or inclusions

Common Sources:
Tangerine Quartz is most commonly found in Brazil, with smaller deposits also in Madagascar and occasionally the USA. Brazilian specimens are especially known for their rich, dusty-orange hue and crystalline clarity beneath the surface.

Formation:
Tangerine Quartz forms when clear or smoky Quartz comes into contact with iron-rich water or sediment either during or after its growth. Over time, iron oxide coats the crystal or seeps into natural fractures, giving it its signature warm orange tone. This process happens naturally underground, and the colour is not the result of artificial heat or treatment.

Interesting Fact:
Unlike some coloured Quartz varieties, the iron oxide in Tangerine Quartz does not cover the surface uniformly. You may see banding, cloudiness, or internal orange veils — a result of how and when the iron settled on the stone during formation.
