Smoky Quartz – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Smoky Quartz – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Quartz
Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)
Crystal System: Trigonal
Hardness: 7 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Transparent to translucent
Colour: Brown to nearly black, ranging from pale smoky grey to deep earthy tones; colour comes from natural irradiation and traces of aluminium

Common Sources:
Smoky Quartz is found in Brazil, Switzerland, Scotland, USA, Madagascar, and Australia. Some of the darkest and most sought-after specimens come from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland and alpine regions in Switzerland.

Formation:
Smoky Quartz forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, typically within pegmatites and alpine clefts. Its smoky colouring is caused by natural gamma radiation interacting with aluminium inclusions within the crystal over long periods of time.

Interesting Fact:
In ancient Scotland, Smoky Quartz was considered the national gem. It was traditionally set into brooches, kilt pins, and ceremonial weapons. The name “Cairngorm” still refers to local varieties of deep brown Smoky Quartz from the Scottish Highlands.
