Serpentine: An Introduction to the Earth's Serpent Stone - Krystallized

Serpentine – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Silicate (Phyllosilicate subgroup)
Chemical Formula: (Mg,Fe)₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄
Crystal System: Monoclinic
Hardness: 3 – 6 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Translucent to opaque
Colour: Commonly light to dark green, but also found in yellow, brown, or creamy tones; may show marbling or veining

Common Sources:
Serpentine is found worldwide, with notable deposits in Peru, China, India, South Africa, Russia, and the USA. The green version often sold as “New Jade” is typically Serpentine.

Formation:
Serpentine forms in metamorphic environments, typically where ultramafic rocks (like peridotite) undergo hydration and low-temperature alteration. Its name comes from its resemblance to a serpent’s skin — smooth, waxy, and greenish.

Important Note:
New Jade is a trade name commonly used to describe soft, translucent green Serpentine. It is not true Jade (Nephrite or Jadeite), but it is often used as a Jade substitute due to its gentle energy and similar appearance.
