Geological Profile
Mineral Group: Silicate – Tourmaline Group
Chemical Formula: NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄
Crystal System: Trigonal
Hardness: 7 – 7.5 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Opaque
Colour: Deep black with striated, column-like structure; may appear shiny, matte, or slightly fibrous
Common Sources:
Black Tourmaline (also known as Schorl) is found in Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa (Namibia, Madagascar), and the USA. Brazil remains one of the primary sources for high-quality material.
Formation:
Black Tourmaline forms in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks. It develops under high pressure and temperature conditions and grows in elongated, striated crystals — often appearing as rods, columns, or natural shards.
Interesting Fact:
Black Tourmaline is one of the few crystals that can become electrically charged when heated or rubbed, a property known as pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity. This is part of why it's thought to deflect electromagnetic energy.
Metaphysical Insight
Black Tourmaline is considered one of the most powerful stones for protection, grounding, and energetic clearing. It is widely used to absorb and deflect negative energy, protect against psychic interference, and keep one's energy field anchored.
