Smoky Quartz is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland, Scotland, USA (Colorado), and Australia. Some of the darkest and clearest specimens come from Brazil and Scotland.

Smoky Quartz forms like all Quartz — in igneous and metamorphic rocks, growing in hydrothermal veins or pegmatites. Its colour is the result of natural radiation interacting with trace amounts of aluminium within the Quartz structure, turning it brown or black.
Interesting Fact:
In ancient times, Smoky Quartz was used in Scottish highland jewellery and sword hilts. In Chinese culture, slabs of Smoky Quartz were also carved into the earliest sunglasses to reduce glare.
