Larimar is found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, in a remote mountainous region of the Barahona Province. It was officially discovered in 1974, though locals had long known of the stone’s presence. Its name combines “Larissa” (the discoverer’s daughter) and “mar” (Spanish for sea), reflecting its oceanic hues.
Formation:
Larimar forms in cavities within volcanic basalt flows. Hot fluids rich in sodium and calcium deposit pectolite crystals, which, when combined with traces of copper and other elements, develop the distinctive blue tones that make Larimar so visually unique.
Interesting Fact:
Though it’s often called the "Dolphin Stone" or "Atlantis Stone," Larimar is not linked to Atlantis in any verifiable way — the nickname stems from metaphysical associations with lost wisdom and oceanic energy.
