Lapis Lazuli – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Lapis Lazuli – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Rock (primarily Lazurite, with Calcite and Pyrite)
Primary Chemical Formula: (Na,Ca)₈(AlSiO₄)₆(SO₄,S,Cl)₂ (Lazurite)
Crystal System: Isometric (Lazurite component)
Hardness: 5 – 5.5 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Opaque
Colour: Rich royal blue with natural specks of golden Pyrite and white Calcite veining

Common Sources:
Lapis Lazuli is primarily sourced from Afghanistan, particularly the Badakhshan region, which has supplied Lapis for over 6,000 years. Other sources include Chile, Russia, and Pakistan, but Afghan Lapis is considered the most prized for its deep colour and fine Pyrite flecks.

Formation:
Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock, not a single mineral. It forms when limestone is altered by heat and pressure, allowing minerals like Lazurite, Calcite, Pyrite, and occasionally Sodalite to crystallise together. True high-grade Lapis has an intense ultramarine hue with minimal Calcite and balanced Pyrite.

Interesting Fact:
Lapis Lazuli was used as a sacred stone in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, carved into scarabs, seals, and ceremonial masks. Ground Lapis was also the source of ultramarine pigment — once more valuable than gold and used by Renaissance painters to depict the robes of the Virgin Mary.
