Calcite – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Calcite – Geological Origins & Metaphysical Meaning

Geological Profile

Mineral Group: Carbonates
Chemical Formula: CaCO₃ (Calcium Carbonate)
Crystal System: Trigonal (often rhombohedral habit)
Hardness: 3 (Mohs Scale)
Transparency: Transparent to opaque
Colour: Found in nearly every colour; most common in white, clear, orange, yellow, green, pink, purple, and blue

Common Sources:
Calcite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, found globally in Mexico, Iceland, USA, Brazil, China, Pakistan, and India. Different varieties are associated with different regions — for example, Blue Calcite is often from Mexico, while Mangano Calcite is usually sourced from Peru or Pakistan.

Formation:
Calcite forms in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous environments. It’s commonly found in limestone and marble and can crystallise in a wide range of structures, including massive, fibrous, stalactitic, and rhombohedral forms.

Interesting Fact:
Calcite displays double refraction — when looking through a clear piece, objects beneath it appear doubled. This property is most noticeable in Optical (Iceland Spar) Calcite.
